Dusk by Cecil Armstrong Gibbs (1889-1960). Not heard it in years, so I am now pleased to catch this “slow waltz” as per the link below, courtesy of the Iain Sutherland Concert Orchestra and its eponymous conductor.

A favourite of mine; not that many recordings available but there is a fine Barry Wordsworth one and, on Marco Polo, a superb one under the great Ernest Tomlinson. Also on the Marco Polo cd is the evergreen VANITY FAIR by Sibelian Anthony Collins (another great favourite of mine) and the delightful ‘Carriage & Pair’ film piece by Benjamin Frankel which Ken Russell featured in his CLASSIC WIDOWS film. Ernest T takes 4 minutes for DUSK but Ron Corp on Hyperion takes 6 minutes: there may be cuts or repeats but it is slower and rather beautiful. Many of us will remember the old STUDIO 2 EMI lp with Sir Vivian Dunn (on cd on Vocalion) but this was the the string arrangement by Jay Wilbur. Less well known, perhaps, is that he later put words to the melody in a brief song, which is where the DUSK title comes from. The song was recorded on Marco Polo by Nick Hancock-Child. Has anyone ever heard any other parts of the FANCY DRESS suite from which this movement comes?
