Thursday 2 June Sir Antonio Pappano [pictured] presents an alternative history of Italian music – from the student Puccini’s Capriccio Sinfonico to Juventus of 1919 by Victor de Sabata: a luscious hymn to youth by a composer who would become one of Italy’s greatest conductors. Plus, the powerful post-war Concerto for Orchestra No 5 by Goffredo Petrassi.
Sunday 5 June Sir Antonio Pappano champions one of the unsung masterpieces of 20th-century opera – Luigi Dallapiccola’s shattering Il prigioniero. For Pappano, it’s one of the undervalued masterpieces of 20th-century opera.
Two further highlights in June are Sunday June 12, Sir Simon Rattle conducts the UK premiere of John Adams I Still Dance, and on Thursday 16 June he conducts a programme of Ligeti, Wagner and Betsy Jolas Histoires vraies featuring Håkan Hardenberger trumpet
