In this filmed, no-audience, concert, Paavo Järvi conducts Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, with the radiant soprano voice of Golda Schultz, in idiomatic, affectionate and very enjoyable renditions of Strauss Family favourites, adding in a guest appearance from Franz Lehár:
Johann Strauss (son)
Overture from ›Die Fledermaus‹
Im Krapfenwaldl, polka française op. 336
Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka, fast polka op. 214
Csárdás ›Klänge der Heimat‹ from ›Die Fledermaus‹
Vergnügungszug, fast polka op. 281
Rosen aus dem Süden, waltz based on themes from the operetta ›Das Spitzentuch der Königin‹ Op. 388
Johann Strauss (son) & Josef Strauss
Pizzicato polka for string orchestra
Johann Strauss (son)
Wein, Weib und Gesang, waltz op. 333
Franz Lehár
Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiß from ›Giuditta‹
Johann Strauss (son)
Unter Donner und Blitz, fast polka op. 324
Josef Strauss
Delirien op. 212
Johann Strauss (father)
Radetzky March op. 228
Well-worth the entrance fee of 9.90 Euros – you’d be cuckoo to miss out (and our avian friend looks in during Opus 336) – but the seventy-minute video is only available to watch until tomorrow, May the Fourth, at 8 p.m.

Yes, this was a first class show in all respects – conducting, singing, orchestral playing. I remember hearing Paavo Järvi do some Johann Strauss with the NHK Symphony a while back, and thinking what a truly vibrant perspective he had to offer. Far from routine. An ideal candidate, I’d have thought, for a fresh take on the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Day concerts – not that, so far as I can trace, he’s ever appeared with them.
