Sad news: Valerie, Lady Solti, née Pitts, widow of Sir Georg, has died at the age of 83. Apr 2, 2021 | News | 4 comments 4 Comments Monica McCabe on April 2, 2021 at 9:05 am John and I met Lady Solti after the premiere of his Concerto for Orchestra at the RFH, which Solti conducted, brilliantly (it can be heard on an LPO own-label CD, together with an amazing performance of The Chagall Windows by the wonderful Bernard Haitink, and some splendid Malcolm Arnold performances). Lady Solti was a lovely person, charming, and very good at dealing with her sometimes slightly temperamental husband, to whom she seemed devoted. Another sad loss. Reply EDWARD CLARK on April 2, 2021 at 9:55 am I had the pleasure of meeting Lady Solti in the Barbican Green Room where I paid my respects and compliments to Sir Georg after hearing his late magisterial Bruckner Ninth Symphony. He was very tired but Lady Solti was the perfect companion both to her loving husband and to me and a few others, she being watchful and friendly towards the moment we were all in. It remains a fond memory not only of a memorable concert but of her kindness and grace . Reply christopher breunig on April 2, 2021 at 10:28 am Colin: lovely photo to remember them by. I remember being backstage at RFH after one Solti concert and he came in briefly, dressed ready to go home, with Valerie: he seemed somehow a much smaller figure compared with the one we’d seen striding on to the podium earlier Reply canderson on April 2, 2021 at 10:45 am Yes, quietly pleased with finding the photo.
