The 3rd edition of the Haydneum Eszterháza Festival will take place from 29 August to 6 September 2025 at Esterházy Palace in Fertőd – the historic residence where Joseph Haydn served as Kapellmeister for over four decades. This year’s programme focuses on works of the Viennese Classical period and its musical environment, performed by outstanding artists in the field of historically informed performance.
The festival opens on 29 August with a concert performance of Haydn’s opera Armida (Hob. XXVIII:12) – one of the composer’s most significant stage works, premiered in Eszterháza in 1784 and now returning to the place of its origin. Conducted by György Vashegyi, the renowned Orfeo Orchestra will perform on period instruments. The soloists are Vasilisa Berzhanskaya (soprano), Ella Smith (soprano), Attila Varga-Tóth (tenor), Zoltán Megyesi (tenor), Léo Guilleau-Keredan (tenor) and Szilveszter Szélpál (bass).
The festival programme offers a wide-ranging musical experience, featuring works by Haydn, Schubert, Mozart, C. P. E. Bach and Beethoven, performed by internationally renowned artists such as violinist Rachel Podger, fortepianists Kristian Bezuidenhout and Andreas Staier. Highlights include a special event dedicated to the phenomenon of “Gypsy Baroque” – the intriguing intersection of Baroque art music and Roma traditions – performed by Il Suonar Parlante with soprano Graciela Gibelli.

Its activities will focus on rediscovering, preserving and disseminating the Hungarian-linked repertoire from the Baroque, Viennese Classical and early Romantic periods (1630–1830). The aim is for a line-up of outstanding performers to dazzle concert-goers with an outstanding repertoire at festivals every year in Budapest, Eszterháza and elsewhere in Hungary, as well as abroad.
