Last night on BBC Radio 4 Extra, a very listenable programme (from 1999) devoted to Alistair Cooke (1908, Salford, UK-2004, New York City). Cooke – music-lover, “golf nut” – is probably best-remembered for his long-running, weekly, BBC Radio programme, Letter from America (broadcast from 1946 until shortly before his death), distinguished by his distinctive voice, clarity and eloquence of delivery, and insightful commentaries.
