Marquee TV, the global arts and culture streaming service, announce Antonio Pappano: Behind the Symphony, a new 3-part documentary series exclusive to the platform with conductor Sir Antonio Pappano and the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO). These enlightening films present Pappano’s deep insight, understanding and passion of three masterpieces of classical music as he takes up the baton for his first season as Chief Conductor of the LSO, inviting audiences backstage to witness their flourishing partnership in action.

Each episode focuses on a particular piece, followed by a full performance of the work filmed at the LSO’s home at the Barbican, London. With a lifetime as an opera conductor, Pappano is steeped in the drama and storytelling of music. Bringing his charismatic flair, he takes the audience on a musical journey to the heart of each symphony and the story of its composition. The first episode, due for release on 12 December, focuses on Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 – recently performed to critical acclaim by Pappano and the LSO, with Bachtrack stating “Pappano wrung every last drop of drama from Mahler’s score” – with the second episode shining a spotlight on Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 on 19 December. The final episode features Copland’s Symphony No. 3 and will be released in 2025.

In addition to Pappano’s reflections on the pieces, the series also features interviews with musicians from the orchestra, sharing their own perceptions on these pieces of music. The films also feature backstage footage and specially filmed rehearsal sessions, giving a unique insight into one of the world’s most celebrated orchestras at the beginning of this new chapter.

Susannah Simons, Director of Performing Arts at Marquee TV, said: “There is a sense of excitement every time Sir Antonio Pappano walks out to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra. With these films, Marquee TV is aiming to share that excitement and to give a sense of what makes his approach to this great music so invigorating.”

The LSO has been a partner of Marquee TV since 2021, and in addition to the new series, the platform has a wealth of concerts from the orchestra available to stream. Highlights include Pappano’s first concert of the 2024-25 season as the Chief Conductor of the Orchestra featuring a new work from James MacMillan, his critically acclaimed interpretation of Mendelssohn’s Elijah with star soloists Dame Sarah Connolly, Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha, Allan Clayton and Gerald Finley, as well as concerts from Sir Simon Rattle, Conductor Emeritus of the LSO. The full LSO collection on Marquee TV can be found here.

The series director is Dominic Best, produced by Ad Lib Productions. Best is a regular collaborator with Pappano – together they have made the hugely successful multi-part television series Pappano’s Classical Voices, Opera Italia and Pappano’s Greatest Arias.

The first episode of Antonio Pappano: Behind the Symphony will be available to stream exclusively on Marquee TV from Thursday 12 December, with the second being added on 19 December.
