Colin comments: I did listen last night, and it was impressive, but I do not feel qualified to review this or any other performance of the B-minor Mass, which, according to the Radio 3 announcer, has “more layers than an onion”, even though I have heard the work several times and have recordings by Celibidache. Giulini and Jochum.
Such profound musical insight in that comment from the Radio 3 announcer! I wonder what he/she would have said had the BBC broadcast the 1951 Third Programme performance conducted by George Enescu, with Katheen Ferrier and Peter Pears amongst the soloists, a broadcast produced by Robert Simpson – or what Simpson would have said had he heard that comment.
