This coming weekend (12 & 13/08), BBC Radio 3 celebrates the career and legacy of TV and film composer Carl Davis and jazz singer Tony Bennett – two musical giants, both of whom passed away this summer.

On Saturday 12 August on Sound of Cinema, Carl Davis leads the BBC Philharmonic in a concert initially broadcast in June 2016 to celebrate the composer’s 80th birthday. Introduced by Matthew Sweet, who is also in conversation with Davis about his seven-decade career in film and television, the programme presents many of the composer’s best-loved scores, for The World At War, The Far Pavilions, Pride and Prejudice, and The French Lieutenant’s Woman amongst others.

On Sunday 13 August, Alyn Shipton presents Jazz Record RequestsThe Good Life: Remembering Tony Bennett, playing listeners’ requests for recordings by the twenty-time GRAMMY Award winner and legendary jazz singer. The programme includes songs showcasing Bennett’s wide-ranging collaborations with figures in the jazz and pop world.

Following the death earlier this month of the acclaimed TV and film composer Carl Davis, another chance to enjoy the BBC Philharmonic in a concert of his music – initially broadcast in June 2016 – introduced by Matthew Sweet to mark the composer’s 80th birthday.

Davis discusses his career in film and television with Matthew and conducts some of his best loved scores, including his music for The World At War, The Far Pavilions, Pride and Prejudice, Cranbrook, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Scandal; and his many silent film soundtracks as well.
