Fast is an underestimate of Kleiber’s way with the outer movements, and salutary to be reminded that he died as far back as 2004.
Before Beethoven 250 year is no more … Carlos Kleiber & the Bavarian State Orchestra perform Symphony 4, Tokyo, May 1986.

Thanks for this, Colin. What an exit from the Beethoven year! I suspect there were numerous and forensic rehearsals, as was the Kleiber way. Then, come the concert: freedom, life, spontaneity, divine madness. Every player caught up in it all, concentrating like crazy. Required reading: ‘Corresponding with Carlos’ by Charles Barber for extra insights into the man’s character, sense of humour, eloquence (English, it will surprise many, was his first language).
