Chief conductor Kirill Petrenko unable to conduct the Berliner Philharmoniker’s
New Year’s Eve concert due to medical reasons – Lahav Shani [pictured] to stand in

The programme has been partly changed; instead of the overture to Erich Wolfgang
Korngold’s incidental music to Much Ado About Nothing and pieces from Richard
Strauss’ orchestral suite Schlagobers, we will now hear Johann Strauss’ overture to Die
Fledermaus and Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite No. 2.

It is with great regret that the chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker Kirill Petrenko has to cancel
his conducting duties at the orchestra’s New Year’s Eve concerts at short notice due to acute back pain.
The orchestra is very grateful to the young Israeli conductor Lahav Shani for being able to step in at such
short notice. The music director of the Israel Philharmonic conducts the Berliner Philharmoniker for the
second time in these concerts following his debut in September 2020.

The programme has been partly changed and is now as follows:
Johann Strauss Die Fledermaus: Overture
Max Bruch Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in G minor, op. 26
Janine Jansen violin
Fritz Kreisler: Liebesleid
Janine Jansen violin
Igor Stravinsky The Firebird, Suite No. 2 (1919 version)
Maurice Ravel: La Valse

Due to the amendment of the Fourth SARS-CoV-2 Infection Protective Measures Emergency Ordinance
of the Berlin Senate, there are also further changes to note when attending the concert. For visitors, this
means that in addition to the 2G rule (admission only for fully vaccinated or recovered persons), a
recent negative test result (antigen rapid test no more than 24 hours old, PCR test no more than 48
hours old) is required. The mandatory testing also applies to those who have received their booster
vaccination. Furthermore, the wearing of an FFP2 mask is mandatory in the whole Philharmonie,
including during the concert. The latest details and hygiene information for the Philharmonie Berlin can
be found in the visitor information on our website.

The Berliner Philharmoniker are very grateful that under these conditions not only the New Year’s Eve
concert but also the concerts previously planned for January 2022 can take place.
For all those who cannot be there live, the New Year’s Eve concert of the Berliner Philharmoniker
conducted by Lahav Shani with violinist Janine Jansen as soloist can be followed on the following media
channels: live from 17:00 in the Digital Concert Hall, in selected cinemas, as a radio broadcast on
rbbKultur, and live time-delayed on television on arte from 18:35.
