Programme update of the November Residence of the Berliner Philharmoniker and its chief
conductor Kirill Petrenko at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden
After the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Easter Festival in Baden-Baden in 2021 and its replacement date in May
2021 unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, the residency of the orchestra will now take place
from 6 to 12 November as a high-profile replacement. For the first time, Kirill Petrenko will conduct the Berliner Philharmoniker in a concert opera performance at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s opera Mazeppa which will be performed on 10 and 12 November. The title role will be sung by Vladislav Sulimsky, and the female lead by Olga Peretyatko. The other roles are taken by a cast of equally outstanding singers. The chorus is the Rundfunkchor Berlin (choirmaster by
Gijs Leenars).
In addition to the concertante opera, the Berliner Philharmoniker will perform two symphony concerts under
the baton of Kirill Petrenko: on 6 November, the programme includes Franz Schubert’s Eighth Symphony
together with the overture to Carl Maria von Weber’s Oberon and Paul Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis.
On 7 November, the orchestra will present Felix Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony No. 3, and Dmitri
Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. There are also chamber music concerts with members of the Berliner
Philharmoniker on 9 November in St. Bernhard Kirche, and on 11 November in the Florentinersaal in the
Casino.
On their way to Baden-Baden, the Berliner Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko will give their traditional
November concert at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt am Main on 2 November. The programme there includes
Weber’s Oberon Overture, Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis and Schubert’s Eighth Symphony.
Following the residency in Baden-Baden, Tchaikovsky’s opera Mazeppa will be given a concert performance
with the same cast on 14 November in the main auditorium of the Philharmonie Berlin and broadcast in the
Digital Concert Hall.
