In November, the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation will focus on a digital programme and the
showcasing of young orchestral talent. In addition to two streams of the orchestra in the Digital Concert
Hall, there will be a release of the education programme’s Vocal Heroes project, and the last concert with
an audience – a family concert with the Karajan Academy – in the Digital Concert Hall archive.
The concert with Daniel Barenboim and the Berliner Philharmoniker planned for the end of November will
take place, albeit without an audience in keeping with current corona guidelines. The Digital Concert Hall
will broadcast the concert live from an otherwise empty Philharmonie on 28 November at 19:00. As
planned, the programme includes Jacques Ibert’s Concerto for flute and orchestra, Ferruccio Busoni’s
Divertimento for flute and orchestra, and Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique. The soloist in this
concert is the Philharmoniker’s principal flute, Emmanuel Pahud [pictured]. On Sunday 29 November, the live
stream will be shown again at 12:00.
As soon as Sunday, 22 November, a special concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker’s brass and
percussion sections will be broadcast in the Digital Concert Hall at 19:00. Among other works, they will
present Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition in an arrangement by Elgar Howarth, and André Jolivet’s
Suite en Concert for solo flute and four percussionists under the baton of Thomas Guggeis, who makes
his debut in Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation concerts with this event. Here, too, the soloist is
Emmanuel Pahud.
In keeping with the pandemic situation, the Vocal Heroes of the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation have
organised their annual sing-along concert this year on a purely virtually basis. Under professional
guidance, the young singers from different parts of Berlin have rehearsed songs from all over the world
and joined together from home to form a virtual choir. The sing-along concert is now available on the
Berliner Philharmoniker’s website, where you can also download the lyrics and sheet music for the perfect
sing-along experience.
New and free of charge, the archive of the Digital Concert Hall presents a concert with the scholarship
holders of the Karajan Academy under the direction of Nodoka Okisawa with the pianists Lucas and
Arthur Jussen and the actress Nina Hoss, which was recorded in the Chamber Music Hall on 1 November.
The concert, including Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, was the last with an audience before
the Philharmonie Berlin was closed again.
An orchestra workshop was held last weekend for Karajan Academy scholarship holders as a purely
internal continuing education programme. In keeping with the Beethoven anniversary year, they worked
with the support of individual members of the Berliner Philharmoniker on excerpts from symphonies by
Ludwig van Beethoven plus various works of the Romantic orchestral repertoire and key orchestral solos.
