I’m confused. Celi conducts the CO for Szell for the premiere of this work. But does Szell then conduct it in the last clip? Who’s doing what with what and to whom in this set of clips? Clarification to this note needed desperately.
No! Szell conducts the premiere in Cleveland in January 1965 (nothing to do with Celi; Métaboles was written for Szell & Cleveland). Celi conducts ORTF in October 1974. Those are the two complete performances here, one Szell, one Celi. Colin
Seems clear enough to me. Metaboles was composed for the Cleveland Orchestra and Szell, and we hear their 1965 premiere, and we also hear Metaboles from Celibidache and the ORTF Orchestra in 1974.
Indeed, is it likely Szell would not conduct his own commission; and, as far as is known, Celibidache never conducted in Cleveland, and very rarely in America anyway.
