CYM and LSSO Anniversary Concert. Photo by Kevin Leighton

Last night, more than 200 players and singers – made up of past and present students – came together to mark the respective 50th and 70th anniversaries of CYM and the LSSO. The concert featured world premieres of new and revised works written specifically to commemorate the double anniversary and was heard alongside a varied programme of music that showcased the talents of the LSSO and students of the CYM Saturday Centre. The programme opened with brass fanfares from Richard Causton and James Moriarty, followed by Michael Zev Gordon’s Youth, an overture celebrating childhood. Vincent Lindsay Clarke, a former student of CYM, adapted his guitar ensemble piece March on the Red Planet especially for last night’s performance. The evening culminated in a revised version of Jonathan Dove’s moving cantata There Was a Child.
