… Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending. Interesting that I heard this on BBC Radio 4’s 11 o’clock news while CFM is still counting down to announce the Number One spot in several hours’ time. Trying to steal CFM’s thunder? (Saves me tuning in later, mind!) A shame though that neither R4’s newsreader nor its reporter could get the composer’s first name correct. It may be spelled Ralph but is in fact pronounced ‘Rafe’, as most of us out here know. Still, Lark is a wonderful piece, so poignant, especially in the very special Hugh Bean/Adrian Boult recording. BTW, the above photo of RVW was taken about the time that he composed Lark.
