Introducing the festival…Fabio Sinacori, Programming Director of the Orchestre National de Lille
THE FESTIVAL IN 10 POINTS:

THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF MAURICE RAVEL
I must admit that “commemorative concerts” are not necessarily my cup of tea. However, this concerns a French artist who has marked, more than anyone else, the imagination of generations of artists and music lovers, both in France and abroad. His style, combining the finesse of an Impressionist colorist with modernism, nourished by jazz and Spanish music influences, is unique and unmatched.Often regarded as the very embodiment of French classical music, his name remains inseparable from this heritage. His complex relationship with French authorities, contrasting with deep patriotism, also contributed to his universal recognition. Today, his work is rightly seen as a French musical treasure, brilliantly illustrating the elegance and innovation that shaped 20th-century French music. Two unmissable events: Recitals by Bertrand Chamayou presenting a complete set of Ravel’s piano works at the Lille Regional Conservatory
A show based on texts from Jean Echenoz’s book Ravel, featuring pianist Hélène Tysman and actor Dominique Pinon at the Théâtre du Casino Barrière in Lille

THE 180TH ANNIVERSARY OF GABRIEL FAURÉ
I confess that the idea of presenting Gabriel Fauré’s masterpiece — his Requiem — at the Lille Piano(s) Festival was born long before we considered the composer’s anniversary…Among the key contributors to this project: Notre-Dame de la Treille Cathedral — a faithful venue of the festival and where all Requiems should be performed! The organ: an instrument akin to “keyboards” that amazes us with its majestic presenceAnd, of course, the artists:

Matthieu Romano, conductorThe Septentrion Choir, frequent collaborators with the ONL on many projects
Olivier Périn, director of the Hauts-de-France Higher School of Music and Dance — titular organist of La Madeleine in Paris, just like Fauré himself, and in the very church where his Requiem was premiered
Two of the three young First Prize piano winners invited to this edition have contributed transcriptions of certain movements from the Requiem exploring the theme of the path toward light. See you at the cinema of Gare Saint Sauveur!
I would also like to mention Théo Fouchenneret, who will perform the complete Nocturnes of Fauré at the Lille Regional Conservatory.

THE CENTENARY OF PIERRE BOULEZ
A major figure in 20th and 21st-century French music, a towering icon of modernity and the avant-garde, and founder of IRCAM (Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music), Pierre Boulez was born exactly 100 years ago. His repertoire, still too little known — perhaps due to a sometimes demanding formalism — deserves rediscovery. We hope that this concert, entirely devoted to his work, will reveal its full richness and depth. Pianist Florent Boffard will perform Twelve Notations along with works by other Second Viennese School composers: Berg and Webern.

BACH’S GOLDBERG VARIATIONS
Every year, we highlight a different “keyboard” or harmonic instrument to perform this masterpiece by one of the founding fathers of Western classical music: Johann Sebastian Bach. This time, we will discover Marimba Synergy, a remarkable marimba duo consisting of Conrado Moya-Sanchez and Katarzyna Mycka, offering a unique performance at the Centre d’Art Sacré in Lille, in the modern part of the Treille crypt.

JAZZ

Designed with the help and creativity of Jazz en Nord and Tourcoing Jazz, the 2025 program will reveal many gems including: PIANOFORTE, in coproduction with l’Aéronef and Tourcoing Jazz — 8 hands with 4 essential French jazzmen: Bojan Z and Pierre de Bethmann on Fender Rhodes, Baptiste Trotignon and Éric Legnini on pianosMark Priore Trio (breakthrough at the 2024 Victoires du Jazz)Luca Sestak TrioFrancesca Tandoi TrioCili Marsall Trio

THE ACCORDION

If Mussorgsky’s famous Pictures at an Exhibition owes much of its fame to Maurice Ravel’s masterful orchestration, it will be presented here in a new light, performed on accordion by Bogdan Nesterenko. Rediscover this fascinating work also with Ghislain Leroy, co-titular organist of the Treille. A double opportunity to appreciate these Pictures from a fresh perspective!

AN ORIGINAL PARTNERSHIP WITH THE WESTFIELD SHOPPING CENTER
Indeed, 7×2 meters is bigger than a Steinway D (concert grand)… A playful way to raise awareness among passersby about our festival during these three days… and perhaps even awaken some musical desires!

A project both poetic and questioning the future of humanity! THE BIRTHPLACE OF CHARLES DE GAULLEWe are happy to return to this venue of the Nord Department for Ostara, a pagan celebration held on the first full moon after the spring equinox. It features a trio of three young artists on Celtic harp and vocals, accordion, and percussion.
