Let’s hope they have preserved the 11-year-old Liberace playing Liszt’s E flat Concerto with Walter Hendl; I think the encore was a Chopin Etude – as the last pupil of Paderewski, Lee certainly possessed the Polish ‘right-hand line’ of ‘three-over-two’ – which you can still see on some of his tv shows, and which seems to have disappeared entirely from piano-teaching these days; it seems to be purely a Polish thing – Rubinstein had it, too, as he showed me at his home.
