Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra for the day for Hillyfields year 5 & 6 students

Students from Hillyfields School took part in a workshop with Dalia Stasevska, Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The opportunity arose as part of a conducting workshop the BBC arranged which is one of a number of activities the BBC is organising in East London in advance of the move of its music studios to Stratford Eastbank. 33 students from Hillyfields School in Waltham Forest took part in the conducting masterclass held at The Barbican on Thursday 7 October.

Dalia introduced the students from year five and six to the role of a conductor in an orchestra, demonstrating conducting techniques with a group of BBC Symphony Orchestra musicians performing extracts from Dvorak Symphony no. 9. The students were given the chance to try conducting musicians themselves, which was followed by the chance to hear the full BBC SO in all their glory in a concert rehearsal.

‘It was a joy to spend time with the young people from Hillyfields School who threw themselves into conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra players. I can’t wait to share the podium with them again soon!’ – Dalia Stasevska, Principal Guest Conductor, BBC Symphony Orchestra

This workshop is part of the BBC’s continued commitment to learning and education programmes around the UK. The masterclass was conceived as part of the move of the BBC’s music studios to Stratford’s Eastbank creative quarter, working with East London Schools on education and learning projects. The BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Singers will relocate to the purpose built studios in Stratford, which will also be the home of the BBC’s rock and pop broadcasts. Stratford Eastbank is a new powerhouse for innovation, creativity and learning on Queen Elizabeth Park. It is a unique collaboration between world-leading universities and arts and culture institutions that opens up opportunities for everyone who visits, lives and works in East London.
