This release represents a parting of the ways as well as a handing over – Maurizio Pollini’s final recording, also him duetting with his son Daniele and said fils alone. Eighty minutes of Schubert is the result, all recorded in Munich, June 2022. Pollini senior’s solo swansong is the G-major Sonata (D894) given a wholesome, boldly dynamic reading that doesn’t stray from its course while benefiting from patrician musicianship and an equal amount of heart and head. You may wish for greater expressive leeway and a more comprehensive colour chart, but there’s no doubting his involvement with the text, and, anyway, the Finale is quite a romp, although, dare I say it, a bit too much, not playful enough. Daniele Pollini’s traversal of the six Moments musicaux (D780) is admirable if not as enticing as some others in these delightful miniatures; while the highlight is the F-minor Fantasy (D940), the two musicians’ four hands and artistic closeness producing a lively, involving version.
