Did anyone know (I didn’t) that in 1958 Sir Adrian Boult recorded Tchaikovsky’s ‘Pathétique’ Symphony for the (equally obscure?) Somerset label? Here is that stereo recording with the London Philharmonic Orchestra transferred from a “near mint” LP…

That is interesting Colin.
I’m sat here looking at a CD transfer, on CRQ Editions (CRQ CD002), of a recording of the “Pathetique” by Boult and the LPO. It’s listed as made in St Mary Magdalene (Paddington) in May 1959 by Miller International.
The accompanying notes indicate it was issued on a Pye Golden Guinea LP in Feb 1960. Remastered for silver disc by the late Jim Bostwick, it involved reversing the channels from the vinyl original to restore the normal balance.
I wouldn’t have associated Sir Adrian with this work either, but it seems doubly odd that orchestra and conductor should, apparently, go into the studio with it twice within a year or so. Wonder if there’s any connection?
Hi Ian, it must be the same recording shared between the labels; I assume on license to Pye. It seems that Boult also recorded Tchaikovsky 5 at about this time. Colin
Hi Colin, that makes sense. Thanks for the information. It’s always interesting to hear interpretations from artists not necessarily associated with the music. For example, I’m currently making my way through the V W symphonies conducted by Rozhdestvensky. Fascinating. It highlights the ‘perils of pidgeon-holing’. Best wishes Ian.
