Following their collaboration on Peter Grimes, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Bergen National Opera join forces once again in November for a new production of Verdi’s Macbeth, which audiences all over the world will be able to watch online for free on the orchestra’s BergenPhiLive platform.

Chief Conductor Edward Gardner will conduct the orchestra and a cast led by Roberto Frontali as Macbeth and Alex Penda as Lady Macbeth, alongside the Edvard Grieg Kor and members of the Bergen Philharmonic Choir. Shakespeare specialist Lenka Udovicki will direct the semi-staged production.

The opera will be performed to sold-out, socially-distanced audiences at Bergen’s Grieghallen on 7, 9, 11 and 13 November, with the last performance being livestreamed for free on the orchestra’s BergenPhiLive platform from 7pm CET on Friday 13 November.

The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Bergen National Opera’s close collaboration has resulted over the years in critically acclaimed productions – Britten’s Peter Grimes, with Stuart Skelton in the title role, earned them 5-star reviews both in Norway and the UK, with the November 2019 performance at the Royal Festival Hall in London being chosen by the Guardian as one of the ‘Top 10 classical music events of 2019’. The studio recording of the opera, featuring the cast of the 2019 performances, was released on Chandos Records in September 2020.
