Debut album, Contemplation for release in September 2024:

songs & arias by Mozart, Gounod, Mahler, Korngold, Britten, Richard Rodgers & others

Erato has signed an exclusive agreement with the young British baritone Huw Montague Rendall. He makes his debut on the label with an album for release in September 2024 – Contemplation, recorded with the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen Normandie under its music director Ben Glassberg.

Showcasing Montague Rendall’s multi-faceted talent and stylistic sensitivity, the programme of Contemplation spans three centuries, four languages (German, French, Italian and English) and the idioms of opera, operetta, Broadway musical, lied and mélodie with arias and songs by Mozart, Thomas, Gounod, Duparc, Messager, Mahler, Korngold, Rodgers and Britten. In a duet from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte the baritone is joined by Canadian soprano Elisabeth Boudreault.

The son of two distinguished opera singers (mezzo-soprano Diana Montague and tenor David Rendall) and an alumnus of London’s Royal College of Music and Zurich’s International Opera Studio, Huw Montague Rendall has appeared on such major stages as the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Lyric Opera of Chicago and Paris Opéra, and at the festivals of Aix-en-Provence, Salzburg and Glyndebourne. In January 2024 he was named Best Newcomer by Germany’s Oper! Awards, and the 2023-24 season has heralded his first appearances at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Staatsoper Hamburg, Teatro Real Madrid and Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris. His first appearances in the title role of Mozart’s Don Giovanni come with concert performances at the Opéra de Rouen in April 2024.

When he sang the title role in Ambroise Thomas’ Hamlet at Berlin’s Komische Oper in May 2023 (Hamlet’s celebrated soliloquy features on Contemplation), Opera magazine wrote: “Huw Montague Rendall was a sensational protagonist, his soft, velvet voice perfectly at home in French, with easy top notes in the Drinking Song and a shining high F sharp to cap the close of Act 1.” The magazine also wrote that “the charismatic Huw Montague Randall… stole all hearts” as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte at London’s Royal Opera House in 2019.

Among his other roles are Debussy’s Pelléas, Mozart’s Count Almaviva and Guglielmo, Donizetti’s Malatesta, Strauss’s Arlekin, Britten’s Ned Keene and Gounod’s Mercutio. He is a keen recitalist and his concert repertoire includes choral works by Bach, Handel, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Fauré, Vaughan Williams and Duruflé.

“Huw is already setting the standard among today’s younger singers,” says Alain Lanceron, President Warner Classics & Erato. “He is as exceptional for the beauty of his voice as for his impeccable sense of style. Over the six years since I first heard him perform on the operatic stage, I have been struck on every occasion by the way he seems to have both the text and the musical idiom in his blood. As becomes clear from Contemplation, he brings a sense of authenticity to everything he performs, whether in German, French, Italian or English.”

Huw Montague Rendall adds: “I am deeply honoured to be becoming a part of the Warner/Erato family. Their vast collection of recordings has been a tremendous spring of inspiration for me over the years.  I am thrilled to collaborate with this exceptional team for my debut album “Contemplation” and to have the opportunity to contribute to their remarkable collection.”
