Thank you, Colin, yet again, for pointing us towards another neglected name from the past.
My only previous knowledge of the work of Golschmann came in the early 1960s from a Vanguard LP (satisfying enough to a teenager back then, but would it stand the test of time?) on which he conducted the Vienna State Opera Orchestra in Enescu’s two Rumanian Rhapsodies.
So it was good to extend my knowledge of the man via this complete Chicago concert from 1953.
A Google search revealed an extensive article on this conductor’s life and career penned by Christopher Howell. I hadn’t realised that Golschmann made quite a number of recordings, including one of the Symphonie Fantastique, which I’m now rather curious to find a copy of. Amongst other facts, I was intrigued to learn that he was Music Director in St. Louis for 27 years, i.e. from 1932 to 1958, which makes one wonder why these days his name is hardly mentioned. I’d be interested to hear the views of others concerning this almost totally forgotten musician.
Thanks Peter, but I can’t take all the credit. Leonard Slatkin, on his site (leonardslatkin.com), regularly posts LP covers via Facebook. One of the recent ones is a Golschmann French collection, my starting point to see what YT could offer for him; glad to find the Chicago concert.
Here’s the Berlioz you seek,
