Born Stockholm July 23, 1796. Here is Berwald’s wonderful Sinfonie singulière (Symphony 3; 1845). Whoever posted this recording managed to omit the performers! Comments added suggest that Okko Kamu is conducting, which means it’s the Helsingborg SO on Naxos. It’s a good account, if not quite Sixten Ehrling in Malmo for Bis, which in turn somewhat bettered his already excellent LSO version for Decca. Enjoy this moreish masterpiece! Glorious slow movement and (introduced by a dramatic timpani stroke) the elves-at-play in the Scherzo…

Yes I adore this wonderfully exciting work by the neglected Franz Berwald.
Indeed together with the Orchestra of the Northern Lights a collective “we” are hoping to perform it in London as part of a concert devoted to all the Nordic countries.
Covid keeps kicking the project back but with determination we will get there.
Also worth hearing is the 1950s recording by the great Igor Markevich; I have never heard this great piece in concert, it deserves more performances.
