   That July 1962 programme, going out at 10.20 in the evening, remains of summer daylight still in the countryside sky where we lived in Sussex, was quite the most astonishing thing I’d ever heard, not least the Sixth Rhapsody – which no one has ever quite dramatised or vamped as he did, before or since. The following year, 3 October 1963, the Third Programme broadcast a 65-minute studio recital, 8.30pm.

   Chopin
   Fantasy in F minor, Op. 49
   Sonata in B flat minor, Op. 35 (Funeral March)
   Grande Valse brillante in E fiat major, Op. 18
   Liszt
   Liebestraum No. 3, in A flat major
   Polonaise in E major
   Grand Galop chromatique
   Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6

   Again, the same Rhapsody. It was mesmerising, life-changing. The only way to play Liszt, I thought. It set the world ablaze, emotions soaring.
