This is but a report, for although this set was released just a few months ago (in May) Decca seems to have deleted it – one mail-order site says so, another isn’t showing it at all, while others advise “out of stock” (lucky those who purchased it). Worth pursuing though for the venerable Herbert Blomstedt (born 1927 and still working a full schedule if currently grounded following a fall) makes music to last, including a distinguished Sibelius Symphony Cycle (much admired by Sir Colin Davis, he told me during an interview) and he’s one of the great Nielsen interpreters. So, whether it’s Bartók, Beethoven, Berwald, Brahms, Bruckner, Hindemith, a line-and-length Mahler ‘Resurrection’ Symphony (from two CDs to one), Schubert, or Richard Strauss – not forgetting Aladdin, Carmina Burana, Peer Gynt, and Roger Sessions – be it Leipzig or San Francisco, the music-making is of the quality needed to build and sustain a library. Decca 485 3281 (33 CDs, all sporting original artwork). Happy hunting.
