Herbert Blomstedt (born 1927) & Ingvar Lidholm (1921-2017)

Tonight at 7.30 (Swedish local time) in Gothenburg, Hebert Blomstedt conducts the GSO in Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony (Romantic) and opens with music by his fellow-Swede Ingvar Lidholm, Kontakion (1978): https://www.gso.se/program/konserter/gso-blomstedt-2/2022-01-13-19:30/.

I was hoping for a live webcast, but it seems not to be, although the concert is being recorded for GSOplay. Keen to hear the new-to-me Kontakion, I found this audio-only performance by the Stockholm Philharmonic and Leif Segerstam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uOeW81kD-8, and a rewarding discovery was made, curiosity satisfied.

A Google search also threw up another Lidholm piece, Poesis, with, appropriately, Blomstedt conducting, the NDR Philharmonic (Hamburg), filmed in January 2016, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPwVrjQgoxM: another worthwhile piece.

I’ll check the GSO website later just in case a webcast is announced, but at least Kontakion has come my way, with Poesis as a welcome bonus.

Colin’s Column already has a Blomstedt Bruckner Four on its books: http://www.colinscolumn.com/september-7-this-year-vienna-philharmonic-at-the-concertgebouw-amsterdam-herbert-blomstedt-conducts-schuberts-unfinished-symphony-no-8-bruckners-romantic-symphony-no-4/.

Next month and into March finds Blomstedt in the US, scheduled to appear with the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and San Francisco Symphony. Covid restrictions allowing of course. At the beginning of May he is with the Vienna Philharmonic (Stravinsky & Mendelssohn), and at the end of that month in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra (Mozart & Bruckner).
