Following a second fall, seemingly more serious than the first – likewise causing many concert withdrawals, including NHK (Tokyo) and several American dates, Cleveland, Los Angeles, San Francisco – it’s heartening to note that, at present, Orchestre de Paris still has Herbert Blomstedt (96) listed for Bruckner Eight on April 24 & 25 (Grande salle Pierre Boulez) and the Vienna Philharmonic retains him for Beethoven’s Missa solemnis on May 25 & 27 (Musikverein). Of course, as these dates get nearer, it may be that plans will have to change – hopefully not – and, indeed, further checking suggests that he is currently in Chicago (but he isn’t, Petr Popelka now conducting).
