Always found this to be a lovely work from the original 10″ Philips LP; I believe it was Honegger’s last composition. The historic first recording was conducted by no less that Paul Sacher and the organist was none other than Maurice Durufle – is it on Eloquence?
The ending of this wonderful piece is very moving indeed. My favourite recording has my favourite singer, the great Camille Maurane (1911-2010): the finest PELLEAS. Try to find his recording (in the rare Japanese Erato tribute set) of ‘Sur le pont MIrabeau’ by Dandelot: an absolute gem. The Honegger is on EMI with Martinon and also has the adorable ‘Pastorale d’ete’.
