Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra European Tour – August–September 2025 Soloists: Jussen Brothers, Alexandre Kantorow and Rudolf Buchbinder
One year after its acclaimed 50th anniversary tour, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) returns to Europe’s cultural capitals. The late-summer 2025 tour includes four concerts under the baton of former Music Director Jaap van Zweden. In Amsterdam, the orchestra will make its long-awaited debut at the Het Concertgebouw, performing over two evenings with the celebrated Dutch piano duo, the Jussen Brothers, and the French pianist Alexandre Kantorow. The tour continues to the Südtirol Festival Merano and the Grafenegg Festival in Austria, where Rudolf Buchbinder will appear as soloist. Jaap van Zweden, who led the HK Phil from 2012 to 2024, will take the podium one last time on this farewell tour before handing over artistic leadership to the orchestra’s new Music Director, Tarmo Peltokoski, beginning in the 2026/27 season.
The program includes classical masterworks such as Wagner’s Tannhäuser Overture, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, and Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Symphony No. 2, alongside contemporary works including Asterismal Dance by Hong Kong composer Daniel Lo and the double concerto In Unison by Joey Roukens. Lucas and Arthur Jussen are among the most sought-after piano duos of our time and are renowned ambassadors of classical music from the Netherlands. Alexandre Kantorow became the first French winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition’s Gold Medal in 2019 and received the Gilmore Artist Award in 2024. Rudolf Buchbinder serves as the Artistic Director of the Grafenegg Festival. Throughout his 65-year career, he has set interpretive standards, particularly with his widely acclaimed performances of Beethoven’s works.
The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra is one of Asia’s leading orchestras and, in 2019, became the first Asian ensemble to be named Orchestra of the Year by Gramophone magazine. Under the artistic direction of Jaap van Zweden, the orchestra has gained international recognition, especially through its widely praised cycle of Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen. The HK Phil is also committed to supporting contemporary composers from Hong Kong and Mainland China and presents a wide range of repertoire, from classical masterworks to innovative programs.
