Guido Alberto Fano (1875-1961)
Luigi Dallapiccola (1904-1975)
Piano Concertos by Italian composers. The Andante e Allegro by Fano lacks distinction, the LPO decidedly disinterested. The best-known composer here is Dallapiccola, but his Concerto is a lacklustre neoclassical affair that refuses to take wing despite Roberto Prosseda’s best efforts, handicapped by uninspired orchestral writing with no attempt made to hide its deficiencies. Somewhat a better listen is the Concerto by Omizzolo, rhythmically livelier if melodically anonymous, with little or nothing to suggest an Italian element let alone a composer with eyes on posterity. The most recent piece is the Carrara, lending its War Silence title to the album as a whole, a stop-start piece, if the most ear-catching, with a cinematic aspect; trouble is, it’s a B-movie. Recorded nearly three years ago, CDA68458 (released January 31) is whatever you make of it, even so these Concertos are staying rare.
