… Paavo Berglund’s Bournemouth recordings of Sibelius Seven and Tapiola (eighteen minutes) – on CD – and am delighted to revisit these imposing accounts. (Of course, he made other versions of these masterworks.)

Berglund in Bournemouth was an exciting time for Sibelius lovers.
It is the first and many think.his best put of three cycles, or is it four!
Never mind. This is excellent interpretation and execution of a collassal symphonic cycle no question
It has less mannerisms than the later ones and retains its freshness and individuality.
Tapiola is less rushed as it became later and The Oceanides has a swirling sound that stays in the mind. It is as Beecham said a very strange work indeed.
Unfortunately The Oceanides is missing from Warner’s box of the complete Symphonies and other pieces from Bournemouth; each of the four discs is very generous though in terms of total timing.
