Not the best of starts for this 1966-68 Bournemouth Symphony collection, an aggressive, primary-colour, unrelentingly intense account of ‘Ibéria’ from Debussy’s Images pour orchestre captured in a big acoustic that emphasises brightness and perhaps precludes quiet playing, which is notably absent; no complaints about the remastering though, which is excellent throughout. Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte is beautifully done, however, heartfelt in its expression, tender, too. Suites from The Three-Cornered Hat are vibrant, capricious and picturesque, the Bournemouth players very responsive to Constantin Silvestri’s flexibility and theatrical input. Further Falla with Nights in the Gardens of Spain, not a piano concerto, but an atmospheric/descriptive work with an important part for the piano, admirably realised with much personality and dexterity by Sylvie Mercier (born 1934 in Paris and who changed professions to that of a photographer more than forty years ago). She is ideally the obbligato to the orchestral painting, Silvestri a vivid if nocturnal colourist. ICA Classics ICAC 5182.
