[COSTA MESA, CA; October 13, 2025]—Three generations of contemporary composers are showcased in a one-night-only performance by Pacific Symphony musicians and piano soloist Steven Osborne in a presentation by London-based International Center for Contemporary Music (ICCM) on Saturday, November 8 at 8 p.m., at the Segerstrom Center for the Performing Arts in Orange County.
ICCM music director Zvonimir Hačko conducts Pacific Symphony in this “Awakening Alternative Energies” program, which features music by Mason Bates, Witold Lutosławski, and John Adams and marks ICCM’s first West Coast presentation. The three works—a movement from Bates’ Alternative Energy (2012), Lutosławski’s Piano Concerto (1988), and Adams’ Harmonielehre (1985)—all deliver a sense joy and vibrancy through their music as tonal, complex, virtuosic, and dramatic 20th and 21st century works.
Bookending the concerto are two orchestral works by California-based composers Mason Bates and John Adams. Bates’ Alternative Energy was commissioned and premiered, as well as recorded, by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2012. Bates’s signature style of blending electronics with the orchestral timbres is on full display in this work, the third movement of which, “Xinjiang Province, 2112,” opens this program.
John Adams’ Harmonielehre is a masterpiece of the marriage of Minimalism and late Romantic style. Adam’s describes the three-movement, 40-minute work as having “shades of Mahler, Sibelius, Debussy, and the young Schoenberg everywhere in this strange piece.” The result clearly showcases his respect and admiration for these giants that came before him while creating something completely new from that inspiration.
Lutosławski’s Piano Concerto (1988) has often been hailed by artists and critics alike as one of the greatest piano concertos of the 20th century. Award-winning British pianist Steven Osborne, noted for his interpretations of piano repertoire from across both periods and genres, is the featured soloist on November 8. Notably, the piece will be recorded with Osborne and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Hačko’s direction, to be released at a later date as part of a three-volume set dedicated to the music of Witold Lutosławski, entitled BEST OF LUTOSLAWSKI, on Signum Label. They will also perform it in New York and London in the 2026-27 season.
Tickets ($30-$100) are available now via the Center’s website or at the Segerstrom Center box office.
ABOUT ICCM
The International Centre for Contemporary Music (ICCM) was formed in 2020 in London by a group of contemporary music experts and industry aficionados hailing from five different countries and representing a variety of music industry specialties. It was designed and developed from top to bottom by the Croatian/American conductor and avid advocate of contemporary music, Zvonimir Hačko. With London as its base, ICCM developed a series of initiatives that propelled the organization toward the top of the London contemporary music scene featuring concerts with London’s leading orchestras, production of various recordings, commissioning of new works, concert tours, festivals, scholarly summits, workshops, and more. Over the course of the last five years, ICCM has entered other new music markets including Warsaw, California, and New York City.
The 2025-26 season represents the culmination of the company’s concerted effort to become active in cities beyond London, thus gaining new ground and support for the production, promotion, and performance of contemporary music. With this in mind, ICCM was incorporated in the U.S. in 2023 as ICCM New York (distinguishing it from its parent company ICCM London) and now, after two years of groundwork, it has organized a series of concerts at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York, Segerstrom Arts Center in Southern California, and in major venues in Philadelphia, Warsaw, and London. Committed to producing, performing, and recording substantial contemporary works, ICCM has worked with a number of contemporary producers, composers, choruses, soloists and orchestras. Its 10-year plan is ambitious, focused, and steeped in a belief that music of our time deserves to be heard and enjoyed by contemporary audiences.
