In other words, Ida Haendel’s newly-issued if Eloquence-‘rescued’ recording of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending, a wonderfully potent account: solace-giving, transporting and emotionally uplifting … it’s a musical wonder that continues to give, elevating a piece that was in danger of becoming stale through over-exposure. Roger Norrington and the LPO deserve plaudits, too.
Plenty of enticing Eloquence releases due during 2021 – for examples, collections devoted to Boult, Anthony Collins, Colin Davis, Jeanne Demessieux (centenary), Erich Kleiber, Maag, Mackerras, Markevitch and Gillian Weir (eighty this year, January 17) … I can’t wait!
