My father liked music across genres, more popular than classical, but with my own interest in the latter growing he discovered pieces he may not otherwise have known. Two absolute favourites were the respective final movements of Sibelius Five and Mahler One, as below. My dad took an interest in my work, such as who I was interviewing. Colin Davis was my first interview – he could not have been nicer, and dad and I went to a few of his concerts – and meeting Leonard Slatkin the first time was a pleasure, so it was a nice touch that one Saturday evening the three of us found ourselves on the same train going to Basingstoke where Leonard was conducting the Philharmonia at The Anvil, Mozart & Mahler, the latter’s Fifth Symphony. Hence my choice of recordings.
