Edward Johnson writes…
Historic Sibelius videos … Do you fancy adding the youthful MTT and the Sibelius 4th from Boston in 1970 …
And Heifetz and Stokowski in the VC from 1934 …
Heifetz didn’t approve the 78s as he was less well balanced than the rest of the orchestra. However, they were eventually dug out of the archive and released in a 12-CD Philadelphia box in 1999.
A welcome survey of Sibelius’s range and power to celebrate the great Finn’s 160th birthday.
He grows stronger with the passing of time.
Strange that London never got to hear MTT perform Sibelius while in London. Not even a single tribute to back up his excellent video of 4.
There is also a film of him disecting Symphony 6.
It was London’s loss.
By the way I now regard the Paavo Jarvi French symphony cycle as the best in recent class. It is perceptive and so interesting.
Thanks Col. You have done Sibelius proud.
