Joaquín Achúcarro’s 90th-Birthday Recital at the Guggenheim Museum, New York City on October 11, 2022; the day itself being November 1.
Brilliant! – Remember Joaquin’s outstanding Festival Hall debut in 1960 with the LSO and Skitch Henderson in Fricker’s Toccata for Piano and Orchestra and Rachmaninoff’s Paganini Rhapsody. Unforgettable! Last saw Joaquin in Dallas in 2011 in the greatest performance of the Schumann Concerto I have ever heard, with Jaap Van Sweden – 5 hours rehearsal on that one work! I heard details and insights I had never understood before – no wonder Joaquin beat John Ogdon into second place at the Liverpool Piano Competition.
Joaquin is still a great artist – and check out his DVD of Brahms 2 with LSO and Colin Davis plus Falla’s Nights with Rattle: you will never hear anything finer.
