Ah yes, wrote the programme notes, a special evening. Opened with Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Themes, closed with Shostakovich Eight. Reviewing it for Derek Elley’s long since defunct International Music Guide, I commented on John’s “rare brilliance” and the “glory” of Svetlanov’s Shostakovich. From 1 October 79, Svetlanov was the LSO’s newly appointed joint Principal Guest Conductor, alongside Colin Davis. The star players turned out that night – Michael Davis, Irvine Arditti, Warwick Hill, Alexander Taylor, Douglas Cummings, Paul Marrion, Richard Taylor (guesting), Anthony Camden, Roger Lord, Jack Brymer, Martin Gatt, David Cripps, Malcolm Smith (guesting), William Lang, Eric Crees, John Fletcher, Kurt-Hans Goedicke, Michael Frye, Russell Jordan, Robert Noble – too many to mention. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTyPmahtGvE
