Julian Lloyd Webber has happily announced successful treatment for prostate cancer but is shocked by last week’s revelation that men over fifty can now be refused testing for the disease.
Earlier this year, the renowned cellist received a prostate cancer diagnosis, just before he was due to celebrate his 75th birthday with a return to the concert platform after an absence of twelve years due to injury and the publication of his autobiography Bows and Arrows. He kept his diagnosis secret until after his April birthday concert, so as not to let anyone down. Following months of intensive treatment, Julian said “I am so thankful for all the expert care I received but I was shocked to learn that my request for an NHS blood test might now be refused. I would never have discovered that I had prostate cancer without that blood test. I feel very grateful and now, after my successful treatment, I can’t wait to start my Irish tour next week”.
