A lesson to some of the young conductors at the Proms this past week, several of whose mannered, flaccid, frenetic, imprecise conducting styles managed only to de-clarify/lessen the music, confuse players and puzzle the critics. Not that you’d know that from the misplaced effusions and posturings of OTT BBC continuity, nor some of the knee-jerk social media raves I’ve been reading … A good dose of masterclass Böhm, Jochum, Sawallisch, Wand, Jansons, Mravinsky, Boult, Slatkin, the Czech school, of Mehta and Maazel – technique gurus par excellence – wouldn’t go amiss.
