Kent Nagano is currently in rehearsals in the south of France at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence for the world premiere of Pascal Dusapin’s Il Viaggio, Dante. The libretto by French author Frédéric Boyer is based on Dante’s Divine Comedy, one of the greatest works of world literature. For the production, staged by Claus Guth, Kent Nagano leads the chorus and orchestra of the Opéra de Lyon (where he was Music Director from 1989 to 1998).
The world premiere in Aix-en-Provence is on 8 July, with further performances on 13, 15 and 17 July. On 13 July, France Musique will broadcast Il Viaggio, Dante live; more information can be found here.This Sunday, Kent Nagano conducts another orchestra that has long been associated with him – at the Kissinger Sommer, he will present works by Schubert and Brahms together with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. He was Artistic Director and Chief Conductor there from 2000 to 2006, and in 2006 the orchestra named him Honorary Conductor. The concert will be broadcast live on the Kissinger Sommer website here and on YouTube.In July, Kent Nagano will continue to travel to the Herrenchiemsee Festival for further concerts, as well as to the Verbier Festival together with pianist Mari Kodama.
The new season in Hamburg begins for Kent Nagano in August with the State Orchestra at the Philharmonic Academy and Brahms’ Deutsches Requiem at the Elbphilharmonie. Another highlight is the new production of Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer at the Hamburg State Opera in a production by Michael Thalheimer. The premiere is on 23 October, more information here.
