Kodak Hall, Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY 14604
Woe is me! I didn’t think to check time differences. Rochester is only four hours behind London, whereas regular haunt New York City is five. I was an hour late, tuning in just as the Shostakovich started.
Opening this Eastman extravaganza, Charles Ives’s wacky for-organ Variations on a tune that usually gets UK citizens to their feet for a rousing chorus of loyalty to the sovereign. William Schuman’s brilliant orchestration brings out all of Ives’s irreverence and mischievous humour… obviously I missed this starter, although Leonard Slatkin’s SLS recording is below. I listened to the Shostakovich, terrific performance, as it also was at the MSM a few months ago. Slatkin is currently in a Shostakovich phase – Symphony Five in Las Vegas last week and coming up again next week with the New York Philharmonic. Meanwhile, I still haven’t heard Jeff Beal’s Body in Motion … maybe Eastman runs to a repeat facility… if so, I’ll be back!
