From Robert Matthew-Walker:
“This work is by Sophie Menter, orchestrated by Tchaikovsky, and is not now considered to be the ‘Concerto in the Hungarian Style’ to which Liszt referred in a letter shortly before his death, saying he had been ‘working on a Concerto in the Hungarian Style during the past three days’. This work does not exist: even Liszt could not write a Concerto in three days – which almost immediately disappeared from sight. The best guess regarding Liszt’s connection is that he suggested a few improvements to Menter’s work (he certainly knew the lady), which was later fully and completely orchestrated by Tchaikovsky. It was first heard a few months after Tchaikovsky’s death. It is not by Liszt.”
