Live music-making resumed at Snape Maltings Concert Hall on 21 August and continues throughout the autumn and winter with regular concerts for live audiences. Bringing together some of the musicians who would have performed during this year’s Aldeburgh Festival and Snape Proms, in addition to other star performers, Britten Pears Arts continues to offer short concerts on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. There are usually two performances per day, at 3pm and 7pm unless otherwise stated.
To give as many people as possible the opportunity to enjoy the return of live music at Snape Maltings, Britten Pears Arts is offering an innovative pricing approach for its afternoon concerts. Every afternoon performance across the weekends is ‘Pay What You Can’, so that audiences can hear up to an hour of high-quality live music at a price they feel they can afford. All evening performances are priced at £15 per ticket.
23 – 25 October
English Touring Opera returns to the stage and picks up where it left off at Snape Maltings, which was the last venue the company was able to visit before its Spring 2020 tour was cancelled. ETO stages music for solo singer and piano by Argento, Britten, Poulenc, Shostakovich and Tippett with a bold and inventive approach to making opera during social distancing. Acclaimed mezzo-soprano Susan Bickley makes her directorial debut with Argento’s A Waterbird Talk and performers include sopranos Paula Sides and Jenny Stafford; mezzo-soprano Katie Stevenson; tenors Richard Dowling and Thomas Elwin; baritone Julien Van Mellaerts; bass Edward Hawkins and pianists Ella O’Neill, Sergey Rybin and Ian Tindale. Soprano Julia Bullock was due to be an Artist in Residence at this year’s Aldeburgh Festival. She is known for her outstanding technique, commanding stage presence, breadth of repertoire and social activism. Bullock makes her Snape Maltings debut singing Britten’s Les Illuminations with the Philharmonia conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen on Friday 30 October at 3pm and 7pm. Baritone Simon Keenlyside and pianist Malcolm Martineau return to Snape to perform a recital including songs by Mahler, Schubert and Strauss on Saturday 31 October at 7pm and Sunday 1 November at 3pm. Tickets will go on sale on Saturday 24 October at 10am.
