Well I hope to go.
Rachmaninov was a permanent exile from Russia (unlike the unfortunate Prokofiev, also being played).
I do hope the new boy plays the exposition repeat.
and does not end the movement with the bogus timpani thump!
You will be delighted to learn that he did not. An extremely fine performance this evening with an enlarged string section (10 double basses).
I KNOW, I WAS THERE! Very impressed by AC and also the violinist: I went to Liverpool on 10 FEBRUARY to hear Aylen Pritchen play the same concerto but Lozakovich was even finer: his quiet playing was exquisite and, modestly, no encore: I am getting sick of encores given even if the audience is not demandig one!
No exposition repeat though!
I should also add – briefly, as Edward is reviewing the concert that the LPO’s Artistic Director, Elena Dubinets who is Russian and married to a Ukrainian gave a moving introduction to the concert which started with a performance of the Ukrainian National
Anthem. Everyone stood and cheered and tears were shed
