Lorin Maazel died on July 13, 2014 at the age of 84

It was mesmerising on the night – my review is linked to below – and, apart from the joy of finding this fondly remembered performance on YouTube, finely preserved from the live BBC Radio 3 relay, eight years later, and away from ‘being there’, I still find this a totally magnetic reading of a great work. There’s a connection between conductor and orchestra, and a concentration in the music-making, that was special at the time, and remains so.
