Many Happy Returns – and Christmas Day greetings – to Jonathan Nott, 60 today. He conducts Sibelius Five with Tokyo Symphony Orchestra (undated but recent, masks) & the Suisse Romande Orchestra in Debussy & Duke Ellington, and Richard Strauss’s Don Quixote (Victoria Hall, Geneva; September 21, 2022).
“For this first concert of 2022-23 season of the OSR, Jonathan Nott conducts soloists Dmitry Rasul-Kareyev (clarinet), Lionel Cottet (cello) and Elçim Özdemir (viola) performing Debussy and Strauss. Marc Perrenoud, our artist in residence for the season, performs Duke Ellington’s ‘New World A-Comin’ in this version for piano and orchestra arranged by Maurice Peress and the cadenza orchestrated by Alexandre Mastrangelo.”
For those of us who love Sibelius 5 this is a particular treat.
I ventured to Bethlehem during the Second Intifada for Christmas Eve.
After the service the square was deserted apart from two television teams, me and my new friend from Holland enjoying a meal.
The next day I took a trip to Galilee and found everywhere deserted.
I did discover the Isreal PO was performing Sibelius 5. I realised there is a God in Heaven.
Merry Christmas Col.
You look after us all in such splendid fashion.
