We met at Maida Vale after one of his Proms commissions was revised.
Alas this practice was long abandoned.
We had a long chat. He told me why he had taken so long to appreciate Sibelius.
‘My father, Walter Goehr told me Sibelius was a good composer of light music’ and that was it. No more discussion was allowed in our household!
‘It was sixty years later when I tuned in to hear Osmo Vanska doing the cycle in Scotland that I realised I had missed this music for so long. It was a real conversion’
It goes to show what a broad minded composer he became.
